Sofia studied dance and music the National Conservatory in Lisbon. and pursued her modern cello studies at Lisbon's Escola Superior de Música. Later, Sofia studied baroque cello and viola da gamba with R. Zipperling at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne; and viola da gamba with W. Kuijken and Ph. Pierlot at the Hague and Brussels Royal Conservatories.

The Centro Nacional de Cultura (Portugal) and the Nuffic-Huygens program (the Netherlands) awarded her with scholarships. Sofia plays baroque cello and viola da gamba with many orchestras and chamber groups across Europe, in various festivals like Festival de Música de Mafra, Bach Festival en Vallée Mosane, and the Holland Festival Oude Musik in Utrecht. In Portugal, she plays regularly with Concerto Campestre, Capela Real and Ludovice Ensemble; and in Belgium, Holland, France and Germany with the Ricercar Consort (Ph. Pierlot) and Colegium Vocale Gent (Ph. Herreweghe), the latter of which she has recorded extensively.
